This is what the WHS Dance Team is all about. This is how we kicked off our best year yet -- with our knockout-worthy, energetic battements, of course. And it all started with a little thing we like to call Spirit Week, or better yet, boot camp.
Our spirit schedules looked a little somethin' like this:
Monday: Time to get personal. Sharing your greatest treasures is a sure-fire way to grow some hefty bonds, my friends.
Tuesday: Finally! Today, we are all nerds! Character day really does have its perks, especially if you got a glimpse of Maggie's Regina George get-up...
Wednesday: It's a good day when all you have to do is roll out of bed and get to practice on time. The PJs were on, and so were the early-morning yawns!
Thursday: P.S. Big hair just doesn't cut it, guys. I tried it. It deflated. But, everyone totally had the 80s workout gear down. I'll admit, jogging down Willowbrook like we'd just stepped out of the space-time continuum tore a few smiles out of my huffing composure. Friday: And we've gotta show a little bulldawg love. No love bites, I promise. Just a little black, a little gold, and a heck of a lot of pomage. Oh, and pictures for the football program of course. If this doesn't look pro, then I don't know what does:

Aw, look at us! |

I'd say we're ready for Back to the Future's DeLorean |
So we've got most of the band dances down. We're leaning towards the smiling phase of our performing lives. What's left to do?
Uh, dance camp?!
We totally got the Edge, as in, the Edge dance camp at NCSU. They threw us on our knees and spun us until we were ready to spew the fish sticks, but holy cow, they whipped us into some spiffy, unified dance team dancers. Almost. There's still some work to do, but we live for work.
After settling in the dorms and making our seenyuh shirts (thanks Emily for the senior quote, by the way) we terrorized the campus with light-up fans and neon Ray-Bands on our way to session 1 of EDGE. Day 1 was followed by Day 2, which eventually led into Day 3 (crazy hair day! Which we take as Wacky Tacky day because we're cool), and -- oh my gosh, could it be? -- we ended with evaluations (this is the part when you hear claps of thunders and bloodcurdling screams) on Day 4. The evaluations aren't bad, they'[re just...well, intimidating.
We're totally made for entertainment |
Did anyone tell you we're also artists? From left: Lauren, Emily, Natalie, Yours Truly (Megan, by the way), Allie, Callie, Jessica, and Maggie! |
Anyway! Through repeat after repeat of the routines, random dance parties featuring all teams, and much, much-needed resting, we made it to day four: the evaluations.
Did you hear the screams yet? Well, you may be scratching your head over this e-vals thing. You see, we -- as a team -- learn a team routine, which combines a jazz, a hip-hop, and a pom dance all into one. We hit our positions until our arms are shaking. We flash our pearly whites until our cheek bones are about to crack. We fall to the floor until our knees are black and blue. This is the hard work we put into the dance.
Because it's going to be evaluated. Then, it's going to be compared to the other dance teams' performances to see who gets to take home first place.
Jittery yet dressed in our gorgeous new uniform tops (I'm told never-before-seen?), we step up to the plate at the call of our school's name. We strut our paws out to the floor and show the judges everything we've got, despite the fact that Jessica had a strained hamstring and Veronique had tendinitis in her knees. Our team did the very best they could possibly do, sissing and huh!ing and DAWGS...ing until we were blue in the face. But we did what we went there to do. We learned a dance. We improved it. We performed.
And we got second place plus various other ribbons and awards that are listed under our About Me page, so go check it out!
In the meantime, we're wrapping up the third week of hardcore boot camp which involves more band dances and more routines and more running. But that's another story. For now, I'd like to inform you that this team is looking fierce...like Britney Spears. And we plan to keep it that way.
